Book Review: D.E. Haggerty’s Buried Appearances

Skylar Dewitt has been ostracized her entire life due to her grandfather’s well-known sympathies with the Nazis. But now her grandfather’s body has been recovered in the Netherlands in an area famous for being a Nazi killing ground. Why would her grandfather be buried in a place legendary for assassinations of resistance members? Skylar jets off to Holland in search of answers about her grandfather’s demise. Along the way she finds long-lost family and old friends but will she solve the mystery of what happened to her grandfather? And maybe she discovers something more valuable than resolving any mystery could be: herself.

About the Author:
I was born and raised in Wisconsin but think I’m a European (a cloggy to be exact). After spending my senior year of high school in Germany, I developed a bad case of wanderlust that is yet to be cured. After high school I returned to the U.S. to attend college ending up with a Bachelor’s degree in History at the tender age of 20 while still managing to spend time bouncing back and forth to Europe during my vacations. Unable to find a job after college and still suffering from wanderlust, I joined the U.S. Army as a Military Policewoman for 5 years. While stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, I met my future husband, a flying Dutchman. After being given my freedom from the Army, I went off to law school. I finished law school and moved to the Netherlands with my husband and became a commercial lawyer for more than a decade. When I could no longer handle the law, we upped stakes and moved to Germany to start a B&B. Three years after starting the B&B, I got the itch to try something else and decided to return to one of my first loves: writing. Between tennis, running, traveling, singing off tune, reading and playing lawyer part-time, I write novels and poetry, blog about everything under the sun and review books.

My Review:
In short, Buried Appearances is a riveting read. Skylar is an angry young woman; her grandfather was known as a Nazi sympathizer and that knowledge tore apart Skylar’s family. What she knows about her past completely changes when his body is found in an area known for resistance members. Haggerty kept me glued to the page from the very beginning; you want Skylar to keep digging, to rid herself of such a heavy burden. Something I’ve always loved about books was being able to travel to places without having to leave a room. Such was the case with Buried Appearances; Haggerty makes such wonderful use of the setting. I give this historical mystery 4.5/5stars.

I’ll Do It Later…

The universe has this horrible habit of making the clock speed up when I have something due. Like now, it’s 20 minutes to midnight and I have absolutely no idea how the day got away from me! It’s this horrible cycle: I have two weeks to do XYZ. Next thing I know, 13.5 days have passed by and I’m freaking out. Years and years of procrastination and breaking the cycle is ever so hard.

I know I’m not alone in this so, I’m asking, anyone have any tried and true methods for buckling down and getting things done?

The One With the Fairy Tales

Settling on something is tough. I’m not talking about things like choosing a mate, where to go college or between Pepsi and Coke. Nothing life changing.  I’m talking about small things – like choosing the name of your blog and not having a mild stroke over it. I’ve changed it six times today and I can’t imagine ever having to decide on the title of a book. (All but one of my children’s stories are untitled.)

So far, I like The One With the Fairy Tales. So far. From the beginning of my blogging adventure, I’d decided that anything I wrote would have to begin with “The One With.” See, my first TV love was Friends and most, if not all of its episode titles begin with those three words. I watch the show daily, and ALWAYS travel with DVD copies too. I feel this connection to it every time I go to write a post.

And why Fairy Tales? To be honest, I wanted to just say Tales but can you imagine telling someone your blog is The One With All the Tales – and getting weird looks because people will think you blog about TAILS. I would have to say, “The One With All the Tales as in T-A-L-E-S, like fairy tales, get it?” and that would get exhausting. Besides, who doesn’t love fairy tales? There are various, long-winded definitions of what a fairy tale is  but most agree on the fact that these tales are magical and imaginative. And I think that’s a great description for the stories on paper, onscreen and on the stage.

The Monster in the Bubble

It’s only Day 2 of my must-blog-for-31-days-straight thing. (I need a real name for this) and I’ve already hit a snag in my plans. I had a post all planned out to coincide with yesterday’s post and it was all going to ebb and flow so well. UGHH. But the show must go on!

I read a new book today, The Monster in the Bubble by Andi Green. It’s a children’s book that I completely fell in love with. Squeek is no ordinary monster – he’s pink and terribly afraid of life outside of his bubble. He dreams of what life could be, all of the wonderful possibilities but his fears keep him locked inside the bubble. I know, this sounds really heavy for a kiddie book but Green keeps it light and child friendly with not only his simple sentences but beautiful illustrations that make the book a gift for children and adults of all ages.

It’s a delightful reminder to take the plunge,

Til tomorrow!

No Longer Waiting For Tomorrow

Sunday, December 1st is nearly over. And today was the day that I promised myself that I would blog, blog DAILY. You see, yesterday, November 30, for most people was the day to recover from Thanksgiving dinner and brutal Black Friday shopping but for me, yesterday was the reminder that NaNoWriMo was over and I had missed the 50,000 word goal by 49,750  words. My Twitter timeline was filled with congratulatory tweets of those who had finished and some that had surpassed the goal.(90,000+ words?! You deserve a medal!) Don’t get me wrong, I was very happy for my fellow writers. How did November go by so fast?! My first day, I sat down and wrote 250 words, rewarded myself with an episode of The Big Bang Theory and then fell asleep. I’d make up the rest tomorrow. But tomorrow came and went. And this went on and on so much so that I had started to sound like I was auditioning for Annie. I really could use a Daddy Warbucks but I digress. It was the middle of the month and making up 25,000 words in one day was overwhelming. I’d catch up on Scandal instead and write something, anything…just later. (Sidebar – that show is fabulous)  I was too tired, too busy, unmotivated annnnnnd you get it, nothing ever materialized. So on November 30, I said December will be my month and I started to write. But how would I keep the momentum going for 31 whole days?!, I wondered (I should’ve started this writing-everyday thing in February.) Well, I found my answer in a tweet! It’s a godsend but that reveal will have to wait until, lest I say it again… tomorrow. Alas, here I am, not writing a novel but writing anyway. And in under the deadline! Barely.

Book Two:
This would have been their perfect love song…It has been two years since Lucia Mpobo-Riddell has made her choice between the two men in her life. She and her beloved would have been perfectly happy if it wasn’t for… the constant distractions from her past, her sister Noor’s complicated life, her own doubts and fears. Maybe there wasn’t such a thing as perfection and this was a lesson that Lucia was going to learn the hard way.

Greg McMullen and Marcus Grant’s lives had been affected by Lucia’s choice that day in Glasgow two years ago. Since then one had been fighting to keep her when the other had been relentlessly trying to get her back. It soon became apparent to them that she wasn’t the Lucia they met and fell in love with anymore. Her life and priorities had completely shifted. To even consider keeping her or just getting her back, they would have to accept it or they would have to let her go. But would they ever be able to do either?

X. Lucia – Pondering about all these things
that she’s done?
“Look it’s your mama!” Marcus says to Cassie. She’s comfortably settled in his arms, her tiny chubby arms around his neck.
“It’s… wow Lucia you look great!”
I love you Fabrice, styling me from head to toe, before I leave for work every morning… against my will and all!
“Hiya, I’ll take this off your hands,” I tell him with a big smug smile.
“No!” Cassie says and holds him tighter.
Don’t embarrass Mama, she’s having an awesome moment

“Or maybe not… so taking a break from your modelling career?” His hair is longer than mine! That’s so sexy and when did his arms get so big and defined? Hello Marcus 2.0 or Mercutio…. I
think Cassie is having a crush. She keeps leaning her head on his chest and smiles.
“I like to mix it up,” he laughs back and Cassie giggles with him.
Right… “Hi Mary, fancy meeting you guys here. I didn’t know you were using this studio too,” I tell her.
She glances at her outfit, simple dark skinny jeans, a loose top and flat boots. What? No stylist hidden in your closet?
She glances at my short blue vintage floral tea dress, my bare naturally tanned legs and my strappy high heels. He did my hair and makeup too.
“Hi Lucia,” she simply says.
That’s right, Fabrice you deserve a raise! “I’m here with Tallie Wilson for the next few weeks but I’m hoping to do part of the album in the Abbey Road Studios,” I say to both of them.
“We use this location when we’re not in my flat,” she says with a hint of something else. Is Marcus blushing? “Anyway, you do look great!” Her work is done, she planted her seed. Well played Mary!
“Thanks,” I say trying to take Cassie from Marcus again but she’s still resisting. “I’m representing my label. I need to look the part.” I’m just repeating B, Alex and Fabrice sales’ speech. Mary and Marcus hum in agreement. I’ll never doubt those three again.
“Mary, lunch sounds fantastic right now,” Marcus tells her and release her hand. They were holding hands? How did I miss that? “But as you can see, I am now otherwise engaged,” he says looking at Cassie. She gives him a very wet kiss. “Just like a Riddell to kiss first!”
I’m so embarrassed. “Shame on you Mercutio! Still seducing babies I see.” Our eyes lock.
“Who’s Mercutio?” Mary asks losing her patience. That girl needs some food in her. She’s so damn skinny!
“Only the best Italian male model in London,” I let out in a laugh.
“Whatever! I don’t have time for this. I’m supposed to meet the director for the music video,” she tells Marcus. She just stares at him like some kind of ultimatum.
“Yes go get something to eat. You’re so fucking skinny!” I whisper but not as low as I wished.
“What!” Mary asks.
“Nothing.” Marcus is trying to suppress a laugh, Cassie is looking at him like is the best thing she’s ever seen. “I was just wondering why you don’t have your own label by now. Most artists at your level do.”
“Why do you mean?” she crosses her skinny arms.
Marcus’ look says the same thing. “Well you would have full creative take on your work, even discover and groom new artists. Influencing the way music evolves. Mary you have so much talent and experience, I’m just surprised you haven’t gone that route…yet,” I tell her, a big manipulative smile on my face.
Marcus is rolling his sexy eyes at us. “What you don’t think I can do it? Thanks Marcus! Lucia you and I need to do lunch,” she says walking away.
“Sure!” Victory!
“Marcus, I’ll see you tonight? My place?” she says.
“I’ll be there,” he mumbles back. Fuck! Time to leave, but he has my kid. “Luce, look at me. I’m not sleeping with Mary,” he says getting closer to me.
“It’s none of my business. I just want my daughter back Marcus,” I say back. I try to take Cassie but she starts to whine so I let her go.
“Don’t do this, I’m not shagging Mary,” he says again. He tries to give me Cassie but she starts to cry. “Okay Cassie, I keep you.”
That is just really pathetic, “Alright, you’re not sleeping with her… whatever!” I shrug.
“You know, with her being so damn skinny and all!” he jokes.
“Bobo?” Cassie asks him.
“Bobo?” he asks me.
“Food, she’s hungry. We were on her way to the kitchen when she escaped.”
“Bobo it is, lead the way,” he tells me. I hesitate for a minute. I could just grab her and go. She’ll cry for a bit then settle down. Lucia?”
“This way.”

Ngontang Mba
Publication Date – January 18th 2013

Book one:
Love can be such a “coulda, woulda, shoulda” song sometimes…
Lucia Mpobo-Riddell could have been a dancer like the rest of women of her family but instead she chose music. Marcus Grant could have been a doctor like the rest of his family but instead he chose music. She also could have not fallen for Marcus on her birthday but she did. And Marcus, he could have told Lucia the truth about his real reason for being in Toronto that night, but he didn’t. Now they have to deal with big reveals and consequences: Marcus almost stealing her job and being force to work on an album together. Marcus, because he couldn’t swallow his pride, leaves Toronto and goes home to London. Lucia, because she just couldn’t give up on her first amazing opportunity to produce a whole album. And to complicate the situation further, the band they’re working for is not the easiest one. Mary Gillis, Marcus’ on and off flame, still has a hold on him. Greg McMullen, Lucia’s close friend and former dance partner is back in town and has been in love with her for years. Then there’s Marcus and Lucia, in the middle of their own a professional and personal tug-of- war with each over and the rest of the world. But maybe things could still work out… All things considered, this could have been one heck of a love song!

My life journey is like my playlist, amazingly unique but full of contradictions
with surprising joys with every song…”
I was born in Quebec City, Canada from Gabonese parents but grew up in Paris and
Libreville the Gabonese capital until the age of 18. Are you yawning yet? I am…
I moved back to Canada in 1999 after high school in Libreville to study Cinematography and Digital movie production in Laval University in Quebec then The International Academy of Design and Technology in Toronto. After graduating in 2003, I decided to sell my soul to the corporate world and worked in the Benefit Outsourcing Industry for seven in Toronto before reconnecting with her first passion writing.
A teacher told me in high school that people didn’t read anymore so I decided that I would make movies instead…so that didn’t stick…
I finally went back to school to study creative writing at Georges Brown College in 2010 and 2011. I started to write The Coulda Woulda Shoulda Song Series as an assignment and finished Book One in late 2011 before moving to London.
And the rest as they say is history… Almost two years later, I’m in London and wrote three novels: This Could Have Been Our Song! A coulda woulda shoulda ballad… (Book one) currently available on amazon and soon in iTunes, Kobo, Barnes and Nobles and Smashwords. The sequel This Would Have Been Our Song! Catchy tune and dancers tales will be release in January 2014. Bird Of Prey, my first mystery novel will be release in October 7th, 2013 on paperback before its wide release in November 25th, 2013. It will be followed by The Plot Thickens (a novella) in January 2014 and Polliannah Got Married! in April 2014 or earlier.

While You’re Away Part 1 by Jessa Holbrook

Now I must preface this by saying that YA romance novels haven’t been my go-to books for the past few years, (But Elyse, you say, this is the third one, out of three, that you’ve posted.  And you’d be correct.) Eh, I go through phases with  genres and I was feeling all lovey-dovey when I picked up this one.

Back to this lovely book…

It’s the first in a series, (coincidentally, also the first series I’ve started) It’s short and sweet and I read it in one sitting but leaves you wanting more.

Sarah is awkward and shy, the complete opposite of her extrovert, flirty boyfriend, Dave. She attracts the attention of gorgeous bad-boy Will Spencer and doesn’t know what to do with herself. Yes, there’s a love triangle. “Haven’t they been done to death?!” you ask. They have and yet, Holbrook is able to hold the attention of this reader with Sarah’s amusing inner dialogue. She curses her doe-eyed nature when around Will and for hurting her current beau. We only see the two boys through the eyes of Sarah and I hope as the series continues that they are fleshed out.

Now, it’s entirely possible that I’ve a deep affection for this character after reading that Sarah was shy; I was curious. I immediately gravitate towards characters with a similar nature but I’ve often found that “shy” characters are nothing of the sort. (Maybe they have some different interpretation of being shy?) Nevertheless, I noticed that it’s not just simply stated that she’s shy, it’s what drives her actions and hesitations. Not the main point of the book, but something I appreciated as a fellow shy person.

I read lots of YA romance in high school. The shy, awkward girl capturing the attention of the jock isn’t new but Holbrook keeps it light and very current. It’s interesting to see social media so incorporated into a story.  (This is the first time I’ve read about a fictional character posting photos to Instagram! We didn’t have that when I was in high school!)
